Brexit and civic identity in the Republic of Cyprus

Abstract

The article is based on the analysis of the current literature and interviews that has been taken by the author in April-May 2019, and focuses on existing issues of European citizenship in the Republic of Cyprus, that have arisen due to the exit of Britain from European Union, or Brexit. It concerns mostly the changing situation for the resident British expatriates, particular groups of migrants and refugees, and children from mixed marriages. The territorial (the issue of new European borders that will emerge after Brexit), social, and economic aspects of citizenship are also discussed. Unique combination of factors, affecting civic identity, is outlined for each resident category affected by the crisis.
